The leaves are turning, the temperature is dropping, and you’ve started opting for hot coffee over iced – the tell-tale signs of fall are definitely here. However, while it may be sad to watch summer days fade away, there’s absolutely no reason for the fun to fade with them.

September in New York is teeming with opportunities for a good time. From concerts to festivals, this upcoming month is full-to-the-brim with amazing events to add to your calendar. Here are 15 things you just have to do in September.

OKTOBERFEST NYC

September 15 – 17, 22 – 24, 29 – October 2

Celebrate the famous German tradition with not one but three weekends of full beer steins, live music, games, and food for purchase at scenic Pier 15. Attendance to this family-friendly event is free.

Sept. 15-17, 22-24, and 29 to Oct. 1 at Watermark Bar, Pier 15, 78 South Street, tickets free or $60 for two-hour beer tasting.
This Oktoberfest, occurring over three weekends, is near Wall Street and features beer pong and cornhole. Add in some dirndl-wearing waitresses wielding steins of Hofbrau, Weihenstephan and Radeberger and you know there’ll be bros and broettes. But you can’t beat the location– Watermark Bar is right on the Hudson, so you can always hop on a ferry and escape to the nearest schooner if things get a little too “zicke, zacke, zicke, zackie, hoi, hoi, hoi.”

Sport your lederhosen and get pumped for Oktoberfest NYC 2017 including great brews, bratwurst, dancing and live music

Strap on those lederhosen—really, people will be wearing them—and raise a mammoth, beer-filled stein to Oktoberfest NYC 2017. The Bavarian celebration is one of the best NYC events in September, featuring some of the best beers in NYC as well as traditional favorites and delicious food. Take in the beautiful fall foliage while guzzling brews at some of the best beer gardens and beer halls in New York, not to mention more celebrations taking places at NYC parks, like Central Park. Prost!

What is Oktoberfest?

This traditional and autumnal festival, which originated in Germany, is celebrated all over the United States by drinking copious amounts of beer, sporting lederhosen, munching on pretzels, and doing some polka dancing and merrymaking.

When is Oktoberfest?

The official dates for this Bavarian festival are Saturday, September 16, 2017 through Monday, October 2, 2017.

Why is Oktoberfest in September?

The first Oktoberfest was held on October 12–17 in 1810 to honor the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. Supposedly, the celebration date was changed to the third week in September in the U.S. due to cold-weather concerns.

Where is Oktoberfest?

Oktoberfest celebrations take place in all five boroughs in New York at various public spaces and beer gardens. The largest events include Oktoberfest in Central Park (Sept 16), Munich on the East River (Sept 29–Oct 8) and Watermark’s Oktoberfest (Sept 15–17, Sept 22–24, Sept 29–Oct 2).

Contrary to popular belief, Oktoberfest in NYC isn’t just about the beer. There are mug-holding competitions, traditional Oompah dancing and plenty of places to feast on authentic German cuisine. While the weather is still breezy and bearable, hit some of the city’s best beer gardens and boat parties for three smashing weekends of fun. This celebration fo German culture is certainly one of the best things to do in fall, so don’t miss out!

Watermark Oktoberfest

Escape to Munich without ever leaving NYC thanks to Watermark’s annual Oktoberfest extravaganza on Pier 15. You’ll get a killer arm workout while carrying one-liter steins ($16) filled to the brim with Hofbrau, Weihenstephan or Radeberger beer (and that means you won’t have to feel too guilty about gorging on German cuisine such as brats and pretzels). While you’re munching and getting tipsy, enjoy amazing views along the East River. Make sure to reserve your spot or book the two-hour tasting before you go.
